Five Habits that Keep Wellness

As a Life Coach I constantly hear people complain about issues that are deeply affecting their lives and acting as barriers to them living successful and satisfying lives. One of the reoccurring themes in many of these conversations is the fact that we do not take good care of ourselves. We are so consumed with our daily tasks and responsibilities that we forget that if we are not well, then we will really have reasons to be worried about.

When we do not take care of ourselves, we see symptoms of instability, irritability, issues at work, conflict with family members, and illness to name a few. Instead, I suggest that you take ownership of your well being by deliberately taking steps to ensure you are always at your best. Some of these ideas are very basic, but it is often at the basics that we fail.

* Rest and sleep well; allow plenty of time to recharge batteries. Some people may need up to 10 hours, know what is best for you and give your body the gift of rest.
* Eat well; have you heard the phrase 'you are what you eat?' So true. In order to have enough energy to live your full day, you need to make sure you look at what you eat and ensure that there is nutrition and balance in your meals. Oh, and make sure you drink plenty of water!
* Exercise; ouch! I know this is a biggie; being there and done that and because of that very reason friend, I can assure you that your whole quality of life changes, when you become more active.
* Do not abuse your body by smoking, drinking or using controlled substances; if you are already, get help. Add years to your life by minimizing your exposure to these habits.
* Treat yourself well; do not talk down on you (nor allow anyone else to do it) and schedule time to take care of yourself; do the things you like even if it is just once a week.

If you embrace these 5 key elements you will see your life transformed. It is crucial that you begin by acknowledging the area (s) where you are currently lacking. I find that many people allow themselves to fall into a trap of feeling guilty or even punishing themselves to cover other, deeper issues. My recommendation is that once you come to terms with the fact that you need to make a move in any of these areas, make a concerted effort to change. If you are disciplined, you can probably start with little steps and make the impact that you need to see. If you have history of failing in the past, you may want to seek the help of someone that you trust or find professional help.

Ultimately, self-care is about personal responsibility. This is something that cannot be delegated and you can trust no one to do it for you. Once you decide what your course of action will be, you will begin to empower yourself and to embark on the road of well being. I want you to know that you deserve to be full, well and in control. You only live once, and you only have one life...what about you start enjoying it? To your success!
